Plants We Love: Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula rubra)

Queen of the Prairie

Majestic, strong and beautiful—all hail the Queen of the Prairie.

This herbaceous perennial is a tall and splendid plant that has large sprays of deep pink flowers. When in full bloom they resemble cotton candy and they bloom all summer long.

Popular Culture Tie-In
Westward the Women, a film directed by William Wellman, 1951. A trail guide escorts a group of women (the original Queens of the Prairie ) from Chicago to California to marry men that have recently settled there.

Queen of the Prairie is a North American native that greeted these pioneers as they travelled west.

Companion Plants
Queen of the Prairie plays well with Bee Balm and Culver’s Root.
